General
Situated
in the southern Valencian Community in the area known as the "Vega Baja" is
the coastal town of Torrevieja a fast developing area on the Costa Blanca.
It currently has a population of about 85,000 of which 40,000 are Spanish.
The remainder consist of British, Irish, Germans, Scandinavians and Dutch It
has over two million visitors per year and it is estimated that in the
height of summer the population reaches more than 650,000.
The nearest airports to Torrevieja are
Alicante (El Altet) Airport approximately 41 kilometres to the north, and
Murcia (San Javier) Airport 32 kilometres to the south. There are many low
cost airlines servicing both airports from most of the UK's major airports.
Torrevieja has a microclimate which has
prompted the World Health Organisation to denote the area as one of the
healthiest in the world. The hottest months are July and August with
temperatures reaching between 28-35 degrees, and the coldest months are
January and February with temperatures from 12-16 degrees. The salt lakes in
the area are the largest in Europe and are home to wildlife including
flamingos. With in excess of over 300 days of sunshine per year it is
proving to be an increasingly popular destination for holidaymakers and
people relocating to make a new life for themselves.
The cost
of living in Torrevieja is considerably lower than that in the UK. Dining
out is generally inexpensive and will almost always prove good value for
money. Car hire is recommended to enable you to appreciate and take full
advantage of the surrounding areas.
Beaches
There are
many wonderful blue flag beaches and coves in the area and most have
facilities such as volleyball nets, cafes and playgrounds for the children.
Some of the most popular in the area are Guardamar, La Mata, La Zenia, Playa
Flamenca, Cabo Roig, Campoamor, Mil Palmeras as well as the beaches in
Torrevieja town itself.
Markets
In the
south Costa Blanca area there are daily markets varying in size and value.
These are extremely popular with locals and tourists. Whether you are
interested in finding a bargain or just looking to pass some time in the sun
they are well worth a visit. The markets have a real atmosphere and feature
many items including textiles, craft, footwear and clothing. There is also a
large variety of flowers and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Entertainment
There are
many activities to do in and around Torrevieja, both night and day! In
addition to the beautiful beaches and markets, you can find sports centres
which includes squash, swimming, badminton, bowling, table tennis etc.
There is
also a go-carting track and during the summer months, there is an Aqua Park
for a great day out with the children.
There is
an abundance of evening entertainment in and around Torrevieja. There are
numerous commercial centres with bars and restaurants – many have live
entertainment most nights and are open VERY late. The Spanish love children
and welcome them too.
Golf
Just
south of Torrevieja there are 3 golf courses, Villamartin, Las Ramblas and
Campoamor. These are excellent courses – the Las Ramblas course is the most
challenging in the area, each having excellent facilities, bars and
restaurants.
